BIODIVERSITY IN THE CHESTNUT TREE RIVER ENVIRONMENT

Caring for biodiversity in the city provides great benefits to people. Biodiversity in the city offers us a healthy and high quality environment in which to live and work, and also helps us to protect and adapt to climate change and other environmental problems such as air and noise pollution, among others.

Despite being a basin that has endured extensive anthropic pressure, the Castaños river basin has allowed the survival of a great biodiversity in its entrails; dense gallery forests formed by oaks, strawberry trees, chestnut trees and alder trees protect its banks, improving the quality of the environment and allowing the existence of numerous species of flora and fauna. Among them a very special species stands out: the spiny fish, very scarce in Euskadi and with a bright red color, which scares away its predators by raising its dorsal spines.
