Description & sights of interest

Join the track at the El Regato car park and head for the Church of San Roque. There, a bridge takes you across the River Castaños. On the other side, turn right towards the district of Tellitu. Just before you get there, you will see an old quarry. Beyond Tellitu the track heads into the woods on one of the steepest but also the prettiest sections of the trail. Just before the 2 km mark, take the turn towards another of Barakaldo’s reservoirs: the Etxebarria reservoir. You will soon reach the site of the old Urdandegieta iron-works, or ferrería in Spanish, from which the trail takes its name. Continue along the track back to El Regato (5km). There, take the road and turn left a few metres further along into the small wood known locally as El Jardín (“the garden”). A fork in the track will take you across the River Loiola (6km). The river is usually very shallow, but be careful as it may be slippery underfoot. Now there is only one last push left. Take the path and then the paved road back down towards the El Regato district. The views on this stretch are particularly attractive. At the end of the trail why not have something to eat at the renowned local bars and restaurants, enjoy the sights or visit the CIHMA (Barakaldo’s History and Environmental Interpretation Centre)?
