Construction of the current Nicolás Larburu vocational training center began in 1935, a year before the outbreak of war. When this happens, the project is paralyzed, although the building’s basements had already been built. They were accessed through stairs and offered some security due to their concrete construction, security that was improved by the placement of sandbags and a steel door.
As in other shelters, the city council took the necessary steps to condition it. On December 3, 1936, the managing director of the Iberian Hydroelectric Society responded to a previous letter from the mayor informing him of the installation of “4 lamps with 100 candles in the shelter built in the Schools (extension) under a construction building” .
Along with this refuge, the historian Koldobika López describes the death of the young Manuel Lores Gistán in a bombing on June 19, 1937.
After the war, the building works continued and the building was inaugurated on June 20, 1944.
Currently, the Nicolas Larburu vocational training center belongs to the Basque public network.
