On June 13, 2017, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of one of the bloodiest Francoist bombings in the town with 26 deaths, the mayor Amaia del Campo, and the spokesman for the Basque Government, Josu Erkoreka, presided over an act with the aim of honor the victims and children of the war.
A plaque was placed on the Herriko Plaza tower that currently reads: “In homage to the people of Barakaldo, who fought for freedom 80 years ago and who had to endure the Franco dictatorship.”
