Below the sports city of San Vicente, at the end of Calle la Bondad, on the BI-745 road that leads to Trápaga, there is a refuge excavated in the rock currently bricked up, of which Sancho de Berurko, the Association for the Study of the Civil War in Euskadi, made a brief analysis before closing its access:
“This shelter has two entrances and a window for ventilation. It is built as if it were a mine gallery -excavated in the living rock- and pneumatic augers were probably used during its construction. It has a wide central gallery and a smaller one parallel to it that are joined together by three corridors. In this secondary gallery there is a water tank that would serve to supply the occupants of the shelter, since the heat of so many people should be suffocating. This reservoir evacuates the excess water to the outside through a drainage tube that ends outside the refuge itself and that acts as an improvised source or spring in which not a few have quenched their thirst, although today a sign warns that the water is not drinkable. The shelter is wide and its height in almost all points is 1,70 meters, more than enough considering that the average height at that time was much smaller than today. Apart from the humidity, the refuge is kept in good condition and has no landslides as the rock is quite solid ”.
The historian Koldobika López probably refers to him when he mentions the “refuge under the San Vicente Cemetery, on the way to Trapagaran” (p.135), adding that “the people cooked inside the refuge with pots and small bonfires that on occasion they caused some fright and some coughing attack ”(p.136).
